Principal’s Message

Mr N.E. Mchunu
Priincipal – Thekwini TVET College

Thanks to the commitment and service of staff and the support of all stakeholders, Thekwini College met most of its strategic targets. The improved funding and the appointment of managers in critical positions has enabled the college to overcome some of its challenges.

Once the issue of the 63% staffing threshold and the PPN has been resolved the college will be able to fill the remaining vacancies especially those of senior lecturers and HOD’s.

Consequently we could become more creative and responsive with our programme qualification mix (PQM). The skills and learnership unit has grown and is trying to expand artisan development opportunities and occupational programmes in high demand so that the youth can secure employment or self- employment opportunities.

It is hoped that the college will be able to attract funding to enable the college to deliver programmes that will be suitable for the 4th Industrial revolution. This calls for us to work collaboratively and have partnerships with more SETAS, government departments and other social partners so that wemeet the skills needs and demands of KZN in general and the Ethekwini region specifically.

We need to strengthen our student support services and provide more professional development training for staff in order to improve academic quality and success, i.e. improved certification, throughput and retention rates.

Even though we received an unqualified AG audit report and have attained ISO 9001:2015 accreditation from SABS we will strive to improve our support system efficiency and functionality.Through sound institutional governance, management and leadership, we hope to entrench a culture of accountability and high performance.

We hope that constant monitoring and evaluation of college performance and continuous improvement will result in more efficient management of information and data reporting systems andprocesses going forward.

We will endeavour to improve our communication systems so that we have better relations with our students and staff. It is also imperative that we improve our OSHE compliance so that we can better deliver quality teaching and learning in conducive, safe and secure sites.

Best wishes for an even better year in 2020
